(Ideas for Using Our Study Skills Guides with Your Students)

Take a Look!

Our Study Skills Guides are packed full of real-world tips which students can put into action straight away.

They are a handy A5 size, contain 36 pages and are written in a punchy style – short chapters, small paragraphs and bullet point information.

No theory. No waffle. No padding.

They are incredible value and are priced to be affordable to buy for a whole year group.

Here are some ideas for making the most of them!

1. Give Them To Students To Keep At Home

2. Use Them To Enrich Special Events

3. Make Them Part of Your Tutorial/PSHE Programme

4. Use Them In Conjunction With Our FREE optional Classroom Worksheets

1. Give Them To Students To Keep At Home

Our Study Skills Guides are an excellent stand-alone resource for students to have at home. They’re easy to read and self-explanatory. So simply give them a copy!

Here are some ideas for when would be a good time to give them out.

Revision Cracked! First Steps (KS3) – before end of year exams in Years 7, 8 and 9.

Revision Cracked! (GCSE) – at the start of Year 11, before PPEs, before the Y11 Easter break.

How Parents Can Help! (GCSE) – at the start of Year 11, before PPEs, before the Y11 Easter break.

Surviving Your Workload! (Sixth Form) – at the start of Y12 or Y13.

2. Use Them To Enrich Special Events

Our Study Skills Guides are ideal to give out to students as an extra resource at special study skills related events.

Here are some events where our study guides would prove a useful additional resource.

Revision Cracked! First Steps (KS3) – Year 7, 8 and 9 Focus/Curriculum Days.

Revision Cracked! (GCSE) – Year 10 and Year 11 Focus/Curriculum Days, special Assemblies looking at achievement and revision.

How Parents Can Help! (GCSE) – Year 10 or Year 11 Parent Information Evenings.

Surviving Your Workload! (Sixth Form) – Sixth Form Induction events (held at the end of Year 11 or the beginning of Year 12), Year 12 and Year 13 Focus/Curriculum Days, special Assemblies looking at achievement and revision.

3. Make Them Part of Your Tutorial/PSHE Programme

Our Study Skills Guides are ideal to use during study periods, when they can be used to explore different study skills/revision topics and to enable students to pick up some top tips.

For instance, if you want to help your Year 11 students to learn how to write a revision timetable, get them to read through Chapter 3 ‘Making Your Revision Plans’ of the Revision Cracked! study guide.

Follow-up activities could include:

– discussing the planning techniques described in the study skills guide

– exploring their own approaches and experiences of revision planning

– using the study guide to write a list of Top Tips about revision planning

– drawing a poster showing the Top Tips

– making a 2-minute presentation on writing revision timetables

You can work through the topics in the order they are found in the study guide, change the order to one that suits the needs of your students better or just select the relevant chapters to cover.

Once the study skills related component of your tutorial programme is finished, give students the study guides to take home.

4. Use Them In Conjunction With Our FREE Optional Classroom Worksheets

The worksheets have been specially written to go with our study skills guides.

They can be used by teachers, form tutors or learning mentors without any specialist knowledge or training and with a minimum of preparation time. The only resources needed to run a session are copies of the study guides and the relevant worksheets.

Each worksheet is designed to last 10-15 minutes, so one worksheet is ideal to use during a single tutor period. All worksheets are 2 pages and contain a variety of questions plus a suggested group/class discussion point.

Once the study skills related component of your tutorial programme is finished, give students the study guides to take home.
